Rodzaj Holwaya utworzył Pier Andrea Saccardo w 1889 r. Gatunkiem typowym jest Holwaya ophiobolus (Ellis) Sacc. 1889[1]. Synonim nazwy naukowej: Crinula Sacc., Ditiola Schulzer, Jugglerandia Lloyd[2]. Nazwę polską podał M. Wilga i in. w 2000 roku[3].
