James Elliot Lapine (ur. 10 stycznia 1949) – amerykański reżyser teatralny, dramaturg, scenarzysta i librecista. Trzykrotnie zdobył nagrodę Tony za Into the Woods, Falsettas i Passion, a także Nagrodę Pulitzera w kategorii dramat za Sunday in the Park with George. Często współpracował ze Stephenem Sondheimem i Williamem Finnem.
Wczesne życie
Lapine urodził się 10 stycznia 1949 w Mansfield w stanie Ohio. Jego matką była Lillian (z domu Feld), a ojcem David Sanford Lapine[1][2]. Ukończył Franklin and Marshall College w 1971. Chociaż w dzieciństwie nie interesował się teatrem, w szkole podstawowej zagrał Jasia w szkolnej inscenizacji baśni Jaś i magiczna fasola[3].
