Historia
Miasto było stolicą dawnej prowincji Echigo. W okresie Sengoku, zamek Kasugayama był znaczącą siedzibą daimyō Kenshina Uesugi. Oficjalnie miasto utworzono 29 kwietnia 1971 roku.
