Rodzaj Karsteniomyces utworzył David Leslie Hawksworth w 1980 r. Jako gatunek typowy wskazał Karsteniomyces peltigerae. Nie określono dokładne pozycji taksonomicznej rodzaju. Do tej pory opisano 3 należące do niego gatunki[1]. Nazwa polska według Wiesława Fałtynowicza[2].
