Rodzaj Protothelenella utworzył Veli Räsänen w 1943 r. Gatunkiem typowym jest Protothelenella reducta (Th. Fr.) Räsänen 1943[1]. Nazwa polska według Wiesława Fałtynowicza[2]. Synonimy nazwy naukowej: Gloeopyrenia Zschacke[3].
