Rodzaj Rostania utworzył Vittore Benedetto Antonio Trevisan de Saint-Léon w 1880 r. Gatunkiem typowym jest Rostania quadrata (J. Lahm ex Körb.) Trevis. 1880[1]. Lichenes of Poland. A fifth annotated checklist[2].
