Przykład komiksu nawiązującego do Wikipedii zatytułowany „Protestujący Wikipedysta”[1]

xkcd – komiks internetowy tworzony przez Randalla Munroe’a[2], absolwenta Christopher Newport University, który pracował jako kontrahent dla NASA[3].

Komiks powstał we wrześniu 2005 roku i określany jest jako „komiks o romansach, sarkazmie, matematyce i języku”[4]. Tytuł komiksu nie jest żadnym akronimem ani nie zawiera żadnego znaczenia; oficjalnie określany jest jako „ceniony i pilnie strzeżony punkt w przestrzeni łańcuchów znaków”[5].

Komiks porusza różne tematy, od miłości (niektóre odcinki zawierają wiersze) po dowcipy matematyczne i naukowe. Niektóre odcinki nawiązują także do współczesnej popkultury, inne do zagadnień informatycznych takich jak SQL injection[6].

Choć większość z odcinków zawiera proste, „patyczkowate” postaci, w niektórych z odcinków pojawiają się krajobrazy, równania matematyczne lub imitacje innych rysowników. Od czasu do czasu pojawia się również realizm[7]. Są też odcinki traktujące o Wikipedii[8].

xkcd publikowany jest na licencji Creative Commons (uznanie autorstwa, do użytku niekomercyjnego).

    Web comics have thrived and one of the best is xkcd.com. The comic strip of „romance, sarcasm, math and language” is brilliant on the stupidity of people who comment on YouTube videos and, oddly, how we take dreaming in our stride: „I’m gonna go comatose for a few hours, hallucinate vividly, then maybe suffer amnesia about the whole experience.”
