Æthelhelm

Æthelhelm atau Æþelhelm (dari tahun 865 sampai tahun 890) merupakan putra termuda Raja Æthelred dari Wessex (Æþelræd).[1]

Ia terlalu muda untuk menjadi raja pada tahun 871, dan tahta diwariskan kepada pamannya, Raja Alfred yang Agung. Æthelhelm terdaftar di dalam wasiat Alfred di pertengahan tahun 880,[2] tetapi ia tidak mendegar hal itu dan kemungkinan meninggal tak lama kemudian.[3]

Dinyatakan bahwa ia merupakan Æthelhelm yang adalah Ealdorman dari Wiltshire, kemungkinan ayah istri Edward yang Lebih Tua, Ælfflæd, namun ini sepertinya mustahil mengingat ini bukan praktik untuk Ætheling (puteri dari dinasti kerajaan yang berhak atas kerajaan) untuk menjadi ealdormen, dan pernikahan antara Edward dan keponakan pertamanya dilarang oleh hukum.[4]

Atas kematian Alfred pada tahun 899 abangnya Æthelwold mewarisi tahta tersebut dan tewas di medan perang.

Sejarawan Æthelweard menyatakan bahwa ia adalah keturunan dari Raja Æthelred dan kemungkinan adalah keturunan dari Æthelhelm.
