Acer tonkinense adalah spesies mapel asal Asia. Tumbuhan ini ditemukan di Tiongkok barat daya (Guangxi, Guizhou, Tibet, Yunnan) dan Indochina bagian utara (Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar).[2]
Acer tonkinense adalah pohon peluruh yang tingginya mencapai 12 meter, dengan kulit kayu berwarna cokelat halus. Daunnya tidak majemuk, dengan lebar hingga 17 cm dan panjang 15 cm, tebal, dan biasanya memiliki 3 lobus.[2][3]
