Alcon, (NYSE: ACL) adalah sebuah perusahaan yang bergerak di industri medis, dengan spesialisasi di bidang perawatan kesehatan mata. Markas besar perusahaan ini terletak di Fort Worth, Texas, Amerika Serikat.
Sejarah
Alcon didirikan pada tahun 1945 di Amerika Serikat. Perusahaan ini awalnya merupakan sebuah perusahaan farmasi kecil yang diberi nama berdasarkan nama pendirinya, Robert Alexander dan William Conner. Conner dan Alexander pada produk ophthalmis steril. Perusahaan ini diresmikan menjadi sebuah perusahaan publik tahun 1947.
Pada tahun 1977, Nestlé dari Swiss membeli Alcon. Alcon kemudian mengembangkan pasar dan mendirikan pabrik-pabrik baru di Amerika Selatan serta Eropa, selain itu, biaya untuk riset dan pengembangan juga ditingkatkan. Pada tahun 80 dan 90-an, Alcon menjadi perusahaan ophthalmis terbesar di dunia. Produk-produk Alcon juga mulai memproduksi peralatan operasi. Saat ini, Alcon beroperasi di 75 negara dan produknya dijual di lebih dari 180 negara. Alcon mempekerjakan sekitar 12.000 pekerja di seluruh dunia.
Alcon berpisah dari Nestlé tahun 2002 dan didaftarkan kembali ke NYSE dan mengeluarkan IPO pada tanggal 21 Maret. Namun demikian, Nestlé tetap menjadi pemegang saham terbesar di Alcon.
Pada 7 April 2008, Novartis mengumumkan akan membeli saham yang dimiliki oleh Nestlé dengan nilai lebih dari USD39 miliar.[1]
