Dioscorea zingiberensis adalah spesies ubi, yaitu sayuran akar berumbi. Tanaman ini telah dibudidayakan di Tiongkok untuk produksi diosgenin,[1] sebuah senyawa antara farmasi penting untuk sintesis hormon steroid.[3][4] Rimpangnya juga menghasilkan saponin steroid (TSS) sebagai bagian dari pengobatan untuk penyakit kardiovaskular.[5]
