"Eye of the Beholder" adalah lagu dari grup musik heavy metal asal Amerika Serikat, Metallica. Lagu ini dirilis pada Oktober 1988 sebagai singel kedua dari album studio keempat mereka, ...And Justice for All, yang juga ditampilkan sebagai lagu ketiga.[3] Lagu ini belum pernah dibawakan secara langsung secara penuh sejak tahun 1989, dan drummer Lars Ulrich menyatakan bahwa lagu ini adalah lagu Metallica yang paling tidak disukainya, sebagian karena tanda biramanya yang bergantian. "Kedengarannya seperti Anda memasukkan pasak persegi ke dalam lubang bundar".[4]
Latar belakang dan komposisi
"Eye of the Beholder" menampilkan lirik politis tentang hakikat kebebasan sipil. Bagian chorusnya dalam 128 kali sementara sisa trek tetap dalam dasar 44 .
Lagu ini tidak pernah dibawakan secara langsung secara keseluruhan sejak tahun 1989, namun lagu ini ditampilkan sebagai bagian dari medley lagu-lagu dari album…And Justice for All yang sering dimainkan oleh band ini dalam konser selama tahun 1990-an. Salah satu medley ini ditampilkan dalam album langsung band tahun 1993 Live Shit: Binge & Purge.[5] Karena ketidaksukaan Ulrich terhadap lagu ini, kemungkinan besar lagu ini tidak akan dimainkan secara penuh lagi.
Versi daur ulang
In Flames merekam sebuah cover lagu "Eye of the Beholder" untuk Metal Militia: A Tribute to Metallica, sebuah album tribut yang direkam oleh berbagai artis. Versi lagu ini juga muncul di edisi remaster EP pertama In Flames, Subterranean. Sebuah cover lagu oleh Life After Death muncul di Metallic Attack: The Ultimate Tribute.
