Hyracotherium[1] pertama muncul 55 juta tahun lalu di amerika utara. Genus ini adalah hewan kecil yang hidup di hutan dan dipandang merupakan anggota pertama famili Equidae, dan leluhur semua anggota famili ini. Hyracotherium teradaptasi dengan habitatnya di hutan Eosen di belahan utara: ia memiliki empat kuku di kaki depan [1] dan tiga di kaki belakang. Ini membantunya berpindah dengan mudah di lantai hutan yang lembut. Ukurannya kecil, memungkinkannya bergerak mudah di antara vegetasi yang padat dan menyembunyikannya dari predator.
