Kalam atau ikan kapas adalah ikan dalam keluarga Gerreidae, ordo Perciformes. Keluarga ini mencakup sekitar 53 spesies yang ditemukan di seluruh dunia, terutama di daerah tropis dan beriklim hangat. Mereka kebanyakan mendiami perairan asin dan payau di pesisir, ada juga yang hidup di air tawar.
Kalam adalah ikan mangsa dan umpan yang umum di banyak belahan dunia, termasuk pantai Amerika Selatan, kepulauan Karibia, Teluk Meksiko, dan pantai Atlantik Amerika Utara.[2] Spesiesnya cenderung sulit diidentifikasi di lapangan dan sering kali memerlukan pemeriksaan mikroskopis. Sebagian besar spesies menunjukkan perilaku bergerombol dan cenderung mengeksploitasi tempat perlindungan perairan dangkal yang terkait dengan wilayah pesisir, untuk menghindari predator berbadan besar seperti hiu lemon.[3]
Kalam juga biasa digunakan di negara-negara Amerika Latin sebagai sebutan untuk berbagai spesies keluarga cichlidae, termasuk ikan tilapia.
