Beberapa spesies kuda nil Madagaskar (juga dikenal sebagai kuda nil pigmi Madagaskar) hidup di pulau Madagaskar namun kini diyakini telah punah. Hewan tersebut sangat mirip dengan kuda nil dan kuda nil pigmi. Catatan fosil menunjukkan bahwa setidaknya satu spesies kuda nil hidup sampai sekitar 1.000 sampai 400 tahun lalu[3] dan bukti lain menunjukkan bahwa spesies tersebut dapat hidup sampai saat ini.[4] Taksonomi hewan tersebut tidaklah tuntas dan tak banyak dikaji.[5][6]
