Makinoa crispata adalah satu-satunya spesies lumut hati dalam genus Makinoa dan famili Makinoaceae. Genus Verdoornia dulunya termasuk dalam famili ini,[3] namun telah dipindahkan ke famili Aneuraceae berdasarkan analisis kladistik sekuens genetik terkini.[4][5]
