Fosil *Pallaviciniites* dari Devon Atas paling bawah sempat menjadi lumut hati tertua yang diketahui sebelum *Metzgeriothallus* ditemukan di strata Devon yang lebih awal.[2]

Tumbuhan ini memiliki sumbu pusat dan bercabang dua (bifurkasi) pada ujungnya; fosil serupa telah ditemukan pada strata yang lebih muda hingga Pleistosen.[3] Terlepas dari sel-sel konduksi aksial (non-vaskular) yang memanjang, talusnya hanya setebal satu sel.[4] Tumbuhan ini memiliki margin yang bergerigi.[1]

Sebelum penemuannya, lumut hati tertua yang diketahui berasal dari Devon Karbon Bawah.[3]
