Pontederia adalah genus tipe dalam famili Pontederiaceae. Genus tumbuhan air ini endemik di Amerika, dengan persebaran yng dimulai dari Kanada hingga Argentina. Anggotanya biasa ditemukan di perairan dangkal atau lumpur. Genus tumbuhan ini dinamai oleh Carl Linnaeus sebagai penghormatan kepada ahli botani asal Italia, Giulio Pontedera.[1]
