Sternopygus adalah sebuah genus ikan pisau kaca yang ditemukan di Amerika Selatan tropis dan subtropis (selatan ke Cekungan Río de la Plata) dan Panama. Mereka hidup di berbagai jenis habitat air tawar, dari sungai deras sampai air diam di dataran banjir, dan habitat dangkal sampai di dasar sungai yang dalam. S. macrurus bahkan akan pergi ke hutan bakau payau untuk mencari makan.[1]
