Tripsacum australe adalah spesies rumput dalam keluarga Poaceae. Tumbuhan ini merupakan tumbuhan tahunan atau geofit rizoma yang tumbuh terutama di bioma tropis basah dan merupakan tanaman endemik di Amerika Selatan. Beberapa nama umum dalam bahasa Spanyol untuk spesies ini, menurut Universidad Nacional de Colombia, antara lain 'arroz silvestre', 'cañarote', dan 'gramalote'.[1]
Distribusi
T. australe berasal dari Bolivia, Brasil Utara, Brasil Tengah-Barat, Kolombia, Guyana Prancis, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad-Tobago, dan Venezuela.[2]
Genetika
Dua varietas yang diketahui[3] dari T. australe bersifat diploid (2n = 36). Kedua varietas dapat bersilangan dan menghasilkan hibrida yang fertil satu sama lain. Kedua varietas ini juga telah disilangkan dengan Tripsacum dactyloides var. meridonale (2n = 36) dan hibrida ini bersifat steril sebagian.[4]
