In June 2012, Eshtehard District was separated from Karaj County in the establishment of Eshtehard County, which was divided into two districts of two rural districts each, with Eshtehard as its capital and only city at the time.[3]
At the most recent census of 2016, it had a population of 1,218 in 374 households. The most populous of its 11 villages was Palangabad (now a city),[6] with 1,012 people.[2]
