Miasto jest najmniejszą stolicą stanową według liczby ludności.
Nazwa pochodzi od francuskiego miasta Montpellier. Wyznaczone na nową stolicę stanu w 1805, pierwsze posiedzenie parlamentu stanowego miało miejsce w 1808.
