Wakil tetap

Wakil tetap adalah diplomat yang memimpin perwakilan diplomatik pada sebuah organisasi internasional.[1]

Organisasi menerima wakil tetap dari negara anggotanya, termasuk Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa (PBB), Organisasi Perdagangan Dunia (WTO), Pakta Pertahanan Atlantik Utara (NATO), Uni Eropa, Organisasi Kerja Sama Islam, dan Organisasi Negara-Negara Amerika. Wakil tetap bisa dikirim ke sub unit atau kantor lapangan pada organisasi. Sebagai contoh, selain wakil tetap yang dikirim ke markas PBB di New York, negara-negara anggota PBB juga menunjuk perwakilan tetap ke kantor-kantor PBB lainnya, seperti yang ada di Jenewa, Nairobi, dan Wina.

Wakil tetap secara informal disebut sebagai duta besar.[2] Namun, meskipun seorang wakil tetap biasanya memegang pangkat diplomatik seorang duta besar, karena ia terakreditasi di sebuah organisasi internasional, jabatan resmi tersebut adalah wakil tetap.[2] Sebagai contoh, Duta Besar Amerika Serikat di PBB secara teknis disebut sebagai wakil tetap untuk PBB, meskipun dia secara luas disebut sebagai duta besar.

Perwakilan diplomatik daripada Paus dinamakan sebagai nunsiatur apostolik, dengan posisi setara dengan perwakilan tetap.[3] Sementara ini pada beberapa organisasi internasional, seperti UNESCO, menggunakan istilah delegasi tetap yang mengacu kepada kepala perwakilan diplomatik dari organisasi tersebut.[4]
