Chloris adalah genus rumput monofiletik yang tersebar luas & termasuk dalam famili Poaceae. Umumnya dikenal dengan nama rumput kincir angin atau rumput jari.[3] Genus ini ditemukan di seluruh dunia, terutama di daerah tropis dan subtropis, dan lebih sering ditemukan di belahan bumi selatan.[3][4] Spesiesnya memiliki morfologi yang bervariasi, tetapi secara umum tingginya kurang dari 0,5 m. Mereka mempunyai bunga majemuk yang berbentuk seperti bunga payung, dengan beberapa bulu yang dilapisi dengan deretan bunga tandan. Genus ini dicirikan oleh rangkaian kuntum steril di atas kuntum paling subur. Durinya biasanya berjumlah 4–10 (terkadang 1–2), kira-kira atau dalam rangkaian 10–20 duri yang agak terpisah, jarang terdapat duri terminal yang jumlahnya tidak terbatas (biasanya sampai 50 atau jarang lebih, seperti yang terlihat pada spesies Chloris roxburghiana).[3][4] Di India, 11 spesiesnya diketahui terdapat dan hanya dua yang endemik yaitu Chloris wightiana dan Chloris bournei.[3][4] Genus ini diambil dari nama sosok dalam mitologi Yunani yang berhubungan dengan bunga dan musim semi.
